What is it?

Wafer manufacturing is the sequence of physical and chemical process steps that turns a chip design's layout into working silicon: photolithography, deposition, etch, ion implantation, chemical-mechanical planarization (CMP), cleaning, in-line metrology, and — after the wafer is complete — die separation, yield analysis, and packaging.

How does it work?

Lithography projects the design's patterns onto a photoresist-coated wafer using light (increasingly extreme ultraviolet for the smallest features), which is then developed to expose the pattern in the resist. Deposition adds thin films by methods such as chemical or physical vapor deposition; etch selectively removes material through the patterned resist to transfer the design's geometry into the underlying film. Ion implantation dopes specific regions with controlled energy and dose to set transistor characteristics. CMP planarizes the wafer surface between layers so each subsequent lithography step starts from a flat, in-focus plane. This sequence repeats dozens of times, building the chip layer by layer, with metrology and defect inspection checking critical dimensions and particle counts at nearly every step. After hundreds of process steps, wafers are tested, diced into individual dies, and packaged — connecting the die electrically and mechanically to the outside world and protecting it.

Why does it matter?

This is where a design's theoretical performance meets physical and statistical reality: process variation, defect density, and yield determine what fraction of manufactured dies actually work and at what performance bin, which is why yield optimization is treated as its own ongoing discipline rather than a one-time step.

How does it connect to the next layer?

None of this — design tools, fabrication equipment, or the compute used to analyze it — runs without the surrounding infrastructure that supports it.
