300mm-Transition

The 300 mm transition changed the wafer manufacturing platform rather than the transistor’s basic operating principle. Moving from 200 mm to 300 mm substrates increases the available circular area. It also requires compatible equipment, wafer handling, carriers, metrology, and factory operations. A larger silicon disk is only one component of a production-ready transition.

The geometric area ratio is 2.25 before edge and yield effects. Wafer area scales with the square of diameter, so 300² divided by 200² equals 2.25. This is not a promise of 2.25 times as many good chips. Die placement, edge exclusions, defects, and the process yield determine how much usable output a manufacturer obtains.

Intel’s June 1999 announcement records a development decision and forward plans. It announced activation of the 300 mm wafer development program and described planned production using a later process generation. The distinction between announced plans and subsequent execution is important: a dated plan should not be cited as if the factory were already producing commercial wafers.

UMC’s chronology supplies a separate construction milestone. Its history records the start of construction of Fab 12A in Tainan in November 1999. Building a facility, qualifying a line, and achieving volume production are different stages. Comparing companies requires like-for-like milestones rather than mixing a construction date with another company’s shipment date.

The economic objective depends on the complete manufacturing system. More die area per wafer can improve productivity only if equipment cost, throughput, utilization, and yield support the investment. Node migration and wafer-size migration can overlap, but neither automatically implies the other. Track both independently when explaining the manufacturing changes around the end of the 1990s.

Read 300 mm transition as a coordinated factory-platform change whose larger wafer area had to be converted into reliable production economics.
