3D-Xpoint

3D XPoint is a nonvolatile memory technology announced by Intel and Micron in July 2015. The name refers to a cross-point array architecture with cells accessed at intersecting conductors and layers that can be stacked. It identifies a memory technology rather than one particular SSD, module, interface, or software operating mode. Those product-level choices determine how a system accesses the medium.

The original announcement described a storage-state change through resistance. That public description should be distinguished from detailed claims about proprietary cell materials or switching mechanisms. An architecture diagram and a product specification provide different levels of information. The documented electrical interface and measured behavior are the appropriate basis for evaluating an actual device.

3D XPoint Conceptual comparison; not a manufacturing specification or scale drawing Technology Nonvolatile cross-point array Intel + Micron: July 2015 Product boundary Controller + interface + firmware SSD and memory forms differ Historical sequence Technology → commercial products Optane wind-down: 2022 A cell technology, a complete storage product, and a persistent-memory programming model are different layers of the system.

Nonvolatile memory occupies a different design space from ordinary DRAM. Persistence, latency, endurance, capacity, and cost are independent engineering axes. Improving one does not establish universal superiority across all of them. A system can use different memory and storage technologies together because they address different parts of the performance and retention hierarchy.

Cross-point cell capability does not directly equal application performance. Controllers, error management, access granularity, interfaces, and software introduce additional behavior and overhead. A storage product accessed through an I/O stack differs from memory exposed through processor load and store operations. The whole access path must be included in a meaningful benchmark.

Intel’s Optane products were a major commercial context for the technology. Optane included different storage and persistent-memory forms rather than a single interchangeable device. Intel later recorded winding down the Optane business in 2022. The historical account therefore separates the 2015 technology announcement, subsequent products, and the later business decision.

Read 3D XPoint as a nonvolatile cross-point memory technology whose practical behavior depends on its complete product and access path.
