Chartered-Semiconductor
Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing was a Singapore-based semiconductor foundry. The Singapore Exchange’s company record states that it was incorporated in 1987. Its relevance to the deep-submicron era is the expansion of contract wafer manufacturing beyond any one country or supplier. It should not be described as a Taiwan-based company.
The foundry role connects customer designs with a qualified fabrication process. Customers need design rules, device models, libraries, and a manufacturing flow that can produce their circuits reliably. The foundry supplies fabrication expertise and capacity, while product architecture and many design decisions remain with the customer. That division requires technical coordination rather than a simple file handoff.
A process partnership and a product company are different relationships. Foundries can collaborate on technology development while manufacturing chips for numerous designers. A partnership does not imply that every partner uses an identical product architecture or owns the same factories. Historical accounts should identify the agreement and its scope instead of treating cooperation as a merger.
The company’s later history connects to GlobalFoundries. GlobalFoundries’ own history identifies the acquisition of Chartered’s Singapore operations in 2010 as part of its global expansion. Keep that later corporate milestone separate from Chartered’s independent 1990s role. Announcement, ownership transfer, and operational integration can have different dates and should not be collapsed casually.
The historical importance is the widening geography of foundry access. A design-focused semiconductor company could consider manufacturing partners with different processes, capacity, and locations. That did not make them interchangeable: qualification and process-specific design remained necessary. Chartered illustrates the growth of a specialized manufacturing industry serving a broader set of chip designers.
