Ddr4

DDR4 is a generation of double-data-rate synchronous dynamic RAM. It defines an interface and operating rules rather than a single chip capacity or fabrication node. The memory cells remain dynamic and require refresh. A complete specification also identifies organization, timing, speed grade, package, and the controller-supported configuration.

DDR4 retains an 8n prefetch organization rather than doubling DDR3’s prefetch width. Micron’s technical FAQ explicitly distinguishes the external rate increase from the internal prefetch organization. Bank groups and command scheduling help shape interface behavior. The external transfer rate therefore does not mean that the storage array performs one complete random access on every data edge.

DDR4 SDRAM Conceptual comparison; not a manufacturing specification or scale drawing Organization 8n prefetch Dynamic cells + refresh Illustrative bandwidth 3200 MT/s × 8 bytes 25.6 GB/s raw, 64-bit path Operating requirements Nominal 1.2 V family Timing + controller + signal integrity External transfer rate, internal array timing, and delivered application bandwidth describe different aspects of DRAM operation.

A bandwidth example separates transfer rate from clock frequency. At an illustrative 3200 MT/s across a 64-bit data path, the ideal raw bandwidth is 3200 million transfers per second × 8 bytes = 25.6 GB/s. This is arithmetic for a stated interface width. Refresh, command spacing, row changes, and controller scheduling reduce useful application throughput.

The standard DDR4 supply is commonly 1.2 V. Micron’s component catalog provides concrete devices at that nominal voltage. Electrical compatibility also depends on the controller, module arrangement, timing, and signal integrity. A matching capacity or connector family is not enough to establish that an arbitrary memory configuration is supported.

Latency and bandwidth need separate evaluation. Cycle-count timings convert to elapsed time using the actual operating clock, while bank and row state affect when commands are legal. Workloads with high row locality differ from scattered random accesses. DDR4 performance is therefore a property of the complete memory subsystem and its traffic pattern.
