FinFET-Concept
The FinFET concept improves gate control by shaping the transistor body into a narrow fin. Gate surfaces act on more than one side of that body, reducing the ability of the drain to control the channel barrier. The central idea is electrostatic geometry, not simply making a conventional planar gate taller.
A narrow body changes the competition between gate and drain fields. As channels shorten, a single surface gate has more difficulty controlling the full semiconductor region. Bringing gate control around multiple surfaces can strengthen that control. Fin width, gate length, dielectric properties, and source/drain geometry must still be designed together.
The late-1990s Berkeley work is a research milestone, not a volume-production date. A November 1999 university announcement described an 18-nanometer-gate FinFET and named the collaborating researchers. That demonstration should not be confused with later commercial process generations. A laboratory transistor and a qualified manufacturing platform have different scopes of evidence.
Early double-gate fins and later commercial variants need careful terminology. The number of electrically active gate surfaces and the substrate implementation can differ. A structural drawing should state which surfaces control the channel instead of assuming every FinFET has exactly the same geometry. FinFET is a device family, not one immutable cross-section.
The concept addresses control, while integration still determines practical value. Contacts, parasitic resistance, capacitance, variability, and layout constraints remain important. Better electrostatics do not remove every scaling problem. The useful historical interpretation is the shift toward three-dimensional device geometry as one way to continue controlling a shorter channel.
