UMC

UMC stands for United Microelectronics Corporation, a Taiwan-based semiconductor manufacturer. The company’s history records establishment in May 1980. For the deep-submicron era, a central event is its 1995 transition toward a pure-play foundry model. That organizational change should be distinguished from the dates when particular manufacturing processes entered production.

A foundry manufactures designs supplied by customers. Its offering includes a qualified process and the information needed to design within that process, together with production capacity and manufacturing execution. A pure-play model concentrates on this role rather than competing through a broad portfolio of self-designed finished chips. The customer and foundry retain different responsibilities.

UMC’s timeline supplies a sequence of process milestones. It records 0.35-micron volume production in January 1996, 0.25-micron in October 1997, and 0.18-micron in March 1999. These are company-specific dates. They are useful evidence of a production progression without claiming that all manufacturers or all process variants followed the same calendar.

Capacity expansion accompanied the technology transitions. The company records the start of Fab 12A construction in Tainan in November 1999. Construction is one stage in establishing a manufacturing platform; qualification and production follow their own schedules. Avoid treating a fab construction announcement as proof of immediate commercial output.

The broader significance is the availability of manufacturing as a specialized service. Design companies could pursue products without owning an equivalent fabrication operation. That required dependable coordination over design rules, process models, quality, and delivery. UMC’s history therefore connects deep-submicron technology progress to the growth of an independent chip-design ecosystem.
