Broadcom
The 1990s Broadcom story concerns Broadcom Corporation, founded in 1991. Henry Samueli and Henry Nicholas established the company to commercialize communications-chip technology. The historical corporation should be distinguished from the later company structure carrying the Broadcom name. A current corporate identity is not a reason to rewrite the earlier organizational history.
Communications chips combine signal processing with physical interfaces. A useful device must connect digital algorithms to real channels, clocks, converters, and external signals. These functions have different accuracy, noise, and timing requirements. The company’s early broadband focus therefore belongs to the mixed-signal and system-integration story as well as to digital scaling.
Broadcom’s own historical filing separates incorporation from product shipment. The filing states that the company was incorporated in August 1991 and began shipping products in 1994. That distinction is useful when comparing semiconductor startups: founding, first silicon, customer qualification, and production revenue are different milestones rather than one interchangeable launch date.
The fabless model links product specialization to outside manufacturing. A communications-chip designer can concentrate on architecture and implementation while using foundry services for wafer fabrication. It still needs process-compatible analog and digital design, verification, and production qualification. The business model does not eliminate the technical difficulty of integrating a complete communications function.
Describe the historical product context rather than projecting today’s portfolio backward. A later acquisition or product category should not be assumed to have existed in the original company’s 1990s lineup. Use dated filings and named products for specific claims. Broadcom’s place in this series is as an example of communications-driven semiconductor design and the growing division between design and fabrication.
