Analyze Yield Economics at 4k Density
# Analyze Yield Economics at 4K Density
Quadrupling the number of memory cells on a comparable die made the 4K generation more sensitive to any single defect, since a flaw in one cell could spoil an entire larger array.
Fabs running the 4K generation had to tighten defect density control relative to the 1K generation just to hold working-die yield at an economically viable level.
Despite that added difficulty, the economics still favored the denser part, because a working 4K chip delivered four times the bits per package, spreading fixed packaging and testing costs across far more usable memory.
