Describe the Quartz Window Package as Eproms Physical Signature
# Describe the Quartz-Window Package as EPROM's Physical Signature
## 4. A Window You Could See the Die Through
The commercial consequence of Frohman's UV-erase discovery is visible on the chip itself: EPROMs shipped in ceramic dual-in-line packages with a small rectangular quartz window set directly over the silicon die, letting ultraviolet light reach the floating gates without opening the package. This is not a cosmetic detail — it is the single most recognizable physical signature of EPROM as a product category, and it exists for exactly one reason: without it, the UV erase mechanism Frohman found would have no path to the die at all. Early production used a genuine fused-quartz window, chosen because ordinary glass or plastic largely blocks the shortwave UV wavelengths (centered near 253.7 nanometers) needed to discharge the floating gates. A paper label was typically placed over the window during normal operation, both to block ambient UV (sunlight and fluorescent lighting contain enough UV to slowly, accidentally alter stored data over months or years) and simply to protect the die from dust and handling.
