Describe Eeproms Business Improvement Electrical Erase in Circuit
# Describe EEPROM's Business Improvement: Electrical Erase, In-Circuit
## 9. The Capability That Actually Changed, Described as a Business Fact
EEPROM's genuine improvement over EPROM was a business and operational one: it could be erased electrically, through the chip's own pins, under program control, without UV light, a lamp, or physical removal from the circuit board at all. This series deliberately describes that improvement as a capability, not as a re-derivation of the underlying tunneling physics that makes electrical erasure possible — that physics is the same family of quantum-tunneling erase/program mechanism already treated in depth elsewhere on this site for NAND flash, and is referenced here by name only. What matters for this series' business history is the consequence: a system built around EEPROM could reprogram its own stored data while fully assembled and, in many designs, while still running in the field. That single change eliminated the pull-erase-reprogram-reinsert cycle described earlier in this series, collapsing a multi-step, lamp-dependent procedure into a short electrical operation a microcontroller could issue on its own.
