EUV-Production-7nm
EUV production at 7 nm describes a specific manufacturing transition rather than every 7 nm process. TSMC’s original N7 and its EUV-enabled N7+ are separate platform milestones. Keeping those names distinct matters because a chip labeled 7 nm does not automatically reveal which exposure techniques were used for its critical layers.
TSMC records N7 volume production in 2018 and N7+ volume production in 2019. Its annual reports distinguish the original FinFET platform from the later EUV-enabled variant. These are dated supplier records. They should not be generalized into one universal date for all companies, products, or layers carrying a similar node label.
EUV can replace some multi-step patterning sequences on selected layers. Shorter-wavelength imaging can reduce particular decomposition requirements, but the benefit depends on the pattern and integration flow. Other layers may continue to use deep-ultraviolet exposure. A production chip therefore combines layer-specific manufacturing choices rather than one exposure method applied uniformly everywhere.
Production readiness requires control of more than nominal resolution. Source stability, mask defects, resist statistics, contamination, overlay, and tool availability influence useful output. A successful exposure demonstration addresses only part of that requirement. Yield and repeatability across complete customer designs establish the manufacturing value.
The historical significance is the move from EUV development to a qualified foundry platform. The tool supplier, materials ecosystem, process integrator, and customer design infrastructure all contributed. Claims about fewer masks or better density require a named comparison and layer scope. N7+ provides a concrete reference for explaining how EUV entered high-volume logic manufacturing.
