Sf2p-Process
SF2P is a performance-oriented process offering in Samsung Foundry’s 2nm-class SF2 family, developed for demanding computing applications. It belongs to Samsung’s gate-all-around nanosheet direction and requires its own qualified design environment. The process name identifies a manufacturing platform; it is not a literal gate-length specification, an application benchmark or a statement that every related SF2 technology has the same features. The useful question is how the selected platform turns a particular circuit into reliable, manufacturable silicon.
A nanosheet transistor is only the starting point. Samsung’s MBCFET approach uses thin semiconductor channels surrounded by the gate. This geometry improves electrostatic control and allows different device choices within a qualified process. Channel dimensions, contacts, capacitance and operating voltage all influence the resulting circuit. The illustration separates devices, contacts and wiring to explain those relationships. Its sheet count and layer count are schematic; it does not reveal an SF2P fabrication recipe or specify which proprietary materials Samsung uses in each layer.
Performance belongs to the routed design. Drive current helps a transistor charge its load, while contact resistance and interconnect resistance-capacitance add delay. Cell selection, placement, routing and memory organization determine which constraints dominate a real block. Synopsys’ June 16, 2025 announcement describes certified digital and analog flows for SF2P and design-technology co-optimization work with Samsung. That establishes design-enablement evidence, rather than a universal percentage speedup for every customer. Any performance comparison needs its exact baseline, voltage, workload and implementation conditions.
A derivative does not automatically inherit every compatibility claim. A chip designer needs the relevant PDK release, characterized libraries, memory compilers, interface IP, extraction rules and reliability limits for the chosen process. Similar node names do not by themselves establish interchangeable layouts or reusable hard IP. Nor should an SF2-versus-SF3 comparison be relabeled as an SF2P-versus-SF2 improvement. Each claim has a particular technology, test vehicle and set of conditions behind it.
Backside power is a separately identified integration choice. Samsung’s 2024 roadmap announcement explicitly associates a backside power delivery network with SF2Z. That feature should not be assigned to SF2P simply because both names begin with SF2. Moving supply wiring behind the devices changes power distribution, contacts and manufacturing integration. The correct description follows the exact platform documentation, rather than treating every performance-oriented nanosheet process as having the same power-network architecture.
Tape-out, design certification and volume production are different milestones. Samsung’s collaboration article with Synopsys reports a customer tape-out using SF2P and 2.5D Cube-S packaging. Separately, Synopsys’ dated 2025 release describes SF2P flow certification and an SF2/I-CubeS HBM design example. Those statements should retain their own process labels and context. A tape-out delivers a manufacturing design; certification validates a defined tool flow. Neither alone provides a public yield figure, proves broad volume shipment or establishes readiness of every interface and product configuration.
The package can determine how much of the silicon’s capability is useful. A demanding AI or HPC design needs appropriate memory capacity, bandwidth, power delivery and heat removal. In a silicon-interposer package, logic and memory communicate through an additional set of physical channels and interfaces. A published integration example does not mean every SF2P chip uses that package or memory generation. The complete evaluation measures sustained work, output quality, energy, latency and good-product cost with the actual die, IP, package and manufacturing maturity.
