Samsung-Sf3

A Samsung 3nm-class process family. SF3 identifies Samsung Foundry’s 3nm-class gate-all-around logic technology. Samsung calls its nanosheet implementation MBCFET, short for Multi-Bridge-Channel Field-Effect Transistor. The process combines this device architecture with a complete manufacturing and design platform. SF3 is a supplier-specific name; it does not mean that its dimensions or libraries match another foundry’s similarly numbered process.

Nanosheets replace fins as the controlled channels. The gate surrounds multiple horizontal semiconductor sheets instead of controlling a protruding fin. Sheet width becomes a design and process parameter for setting effective channel width and drive capability. Wider sheets can provide more current but also change capacitance and layout constraints. The available options are qualified by the foundry, rather than being arbitrary dimensions that a chip designer can freely choose.

Keep the first production announcement distinct. Samsung announced initial production of a GAA-based 3nm process in June 2022. That announcement establishes the origin of its commercial 3nm GAA generation; it should not be used as the introduction date of every later SF3 variant. The process catalog and a product’s actual manufacturing specification are needed to identify the precise release used by a customer design.

Device benefits must survive the circuit implementation. Improved channel control can support lower leakage or operation at lower voltage, but contacts and interconnects contribute resistance and capacitance. Standard cells, SRAM arrays, analog blocks, and interfaces place different demands on the platform. A useful performance claim therefore identifies the voltage, circuit, baseline, and layout assumptions rather than attributing a whole-chip result solely to the use of nanosheets.

A family name is the beginning of qualification. A customer needs suitable IP, verification rules, extraction models, reliability data, and a manufacturing plan for the selected process. Packaging and thermal constraints also influence the achievable operating point. For historical or technical comparisons, distinguish a device demonstration, initial wafer production, product qualification, and sustained shipment. Each milestone answers a different question about readiness and commercial use.
